Styles of Tai Chi


 
Over time there have evolved a variety of styles or schools of Tai Chi Chuan. These reflect both growth and developement of the form in general, as well as differences of style and emphasis between different teachers. Elements of other martial arts forms have made themselves felt in Tai Chi and this has changed its character as well.

Most of the different styles or schools of Tai Chi have been given the surnames of their founders. The following are principles schools of Tai Chi that are in existance today.

Chen Style
Hao (or Wu Shi) Style
Hu Lei Style
Sun Style Wu Style
Yang Style
Zhao Bao Style


About The Tai Chi Form

The Tai Chi form is composed of a series  of postures, put together in a very f lowing,   but precise way. In learning the postures  and also learning how to connect each  posture in a prescribed manner, one learns  how to control body  and mind in  harmony. Once all the postures are  learned, the Tai Chi form is refined.

In the class called "Corrections", the body  mechanics of the Tai Chi form, the mind  and how it relates, and the blending of the  mind and body is taught. The student  becomes aware of new relationships, has better control of his or her body, develops internal strength of one's body and eventually learns to abandon fear and anxiety for calmness, vitality, flexibilty and good body coordination.
